Laura Wheeler Waring was an American artist and educator who was celebrated for her realistic portraits, landscapes, and still life, particularly her notable depictions of African Americans during the Harlem Renaissance. A pivotal moment in her career occurred when she became one of the few African American artists to work in France, where she gained significant recognition, exhibited her work in Paris, and received several awards. She spent the next 30 years teaching art at Cheyney University in Pennsylvania after this period.
