About the artist

Patrick Henry Bruce

Bruce, a descendant of Patrick Henry, was born in Campbell County, Virginia, as the second of four children. His family had once owned the vast Berry Hill plantation, which over 3,000 slaves operated. This estate, originally part of a 105,000-acre tract granted by the English Crown to William Byrd II in 1728, is now a resort and conference centre near South Boston, Virginia, and has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The family's wealth was significantly reduced after the Civil War. In 1898, while working in a real estate office during the day, Bruce began attending evening classes at the Art Club of Richmond. His earliest known surviving painting dates back to 1900.
