About the artist

Henry Lyman Saÿen

Saÿen was born in Philadelphia on April 25, 1875, to Edward M. Saÿen and Annie T. Saÿen (née Thomas). After graduating from Central Manual Training School in 1891, he began working for James W. Queen & Company, a prominent manufacturer of scientific equipment. At 18 years old, he gained recognition for designing a large induction coil showcased at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. In 1897, he received a patent for a self-regulating X-ray tube, the first to address the issue of unstable output caused by a drop in tube gas pressure.
