John Frederick Peto, an American trompe l'oeil ("fool the eye") painter, was largely forgotten until his works were rediscovered alongside those of fellow artist William Harnett. While Peto and the slightly older Harnett shared similar subjects and knew each other, their careers took distinct trajectories.
