Grigoriev was born in Rybinsk and attended the Stroganov Art School from 1903 to 1907, where he studied under Dmitry Shcherbinovsky. He then continued his education at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg from 1907 to 1912, studying with Alexander Kiselyov, Dmitry Kardovsky, and Abram Arkhipov. Grigoriev began exhibiting his artwork in 1909 as part of the Union of Impressionists group and joined the World of Art movement in 1913. Around the same time, he also authored a novel titled "Young Rays".
