Carl Newman, a figure drawing instructor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, was a close friend of painter Henry Lyman Saÿen. The two artists spent a summer in Paris, where they experimented with colour, creating new and vibrant shades of paint (Breeskin, *H. Lyman Saÿen*, 1970). Newman's large, flamboyant depictions of nude figures often provoked outrage among the American public, and one of his paintings was even removed from an exhibition due to numerous complaints. Unfortunately, much of his later work was destroyed by his widow, who came to resent the paintings when they failed to generate income during the Depression.
