About the artist

Joaquín Torres-García

Joaquín Torres García was a renowned artist of Uruguayan and Spanish heritage. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on July 28, 1874, he moved to Catalonia, Spain, during his adolescence. In 1891, he began his artistic career there, spending the next three decades deeply immersed in Catalan identity and propelling Barcelona and European art and culture to the forefront of the avant-garde movement. A true "renaissance man," Torres García was a painter, sculptor, muralist, novelist, writer, teacher, and theorist. His influence extended across the United States, Italy, France, and Uruguay, significantly impacting modern art in Europe, North America, and South America. He navigated the perpetual tension between the old and the new, the classical and the avant-garde, reason and emotion, figuration and abstraction with a brilliant and straightforward metaphor: no contradiction or incompatibility. Like Goethe, Torres García sought to integrate classicism with modernity.
