Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who, although unrecognised during his lifetime, became one of the most renowned and influential figures in Western art history after his death. Over ten years, he produced approximately 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which were created in the final two years of his life. His work encompasses landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits, characterized by vivid colours and dramatic, impulsive, and expressive brushwork, laying the groundwork for modern art. Despite his prolific output, Van Gogh struggled with mental illness, depression, and poverty, ultimately leading to his suicide at the age of 37.
