Freundlich was born in Stolp, Province of Pomerania, Prussia. His mother was a first cousin of the writer Samuel Lublinski. Initially, Otto studied dentistry, but he eventually pursued an art career. In 1908, he moved to Paris and settled in Montmartre at the Bateau-Lavoir, where he lived near notable artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. In 1914, he returned to Germany. Freundlich became politically active after World War I and joined the November Group. In 1919, he, Max Ernst, and Johannes Theodor Baargeld organised the first Dada exhibition in Cologne. He later joined the Abstraction-Création group in 1925.
