About the artist

Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso

Amadeo was born in Mancelos, Amarante. At 18, he enrolled at the Superior School of Fine Arts in Lisbon and, a year later, moved to Paris to study. He soon switched from architecture to painting, with a background in caricatures. In 1908, he lived at 14 Cité de Falguière, attending ateliers at the Académie des Beaux-Arts and Viti Academy under Anglada Camarasa. In 1910, he spent several months in Brussels, and by 1911, his works were shown at the Salon des Indépendants. He befriended notable artists and writers, including Gertrude Stein, Juan Gris, Amedeo Modigliani, and the Delaunays.
