While often labelled as an Expressionist, Beckmann himself distanced himself from the term and the movement it represented. In the 1920s, his work became linked with the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), a style that emerged from Expressionism but stood in contrast to its inward-focused emotionalism. Beckmann's art evolved to feature disturbing imagery and distorted forms, blending harsh realism with sharp social commentary.
