Arthur Garfield Dove was an American artist and a pioneer of American modernism, often regarded as the first American abstract painter. Dove employed diverse media, frequently combining them in unconventional ways to create his abstract works and landscapes. His 1937 piece, "Me and the Moon," is a notable example of his abstract landscapes and is considered one of the defining works of his career. In the 1920s, Dove created a series of experimental collages, exploring various techniques. His innovative approach included mixing hand-mixed oils or tempera with a wax emulsion, as seen in his 1938 painting "Tanks," which is part of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts collection.
