Václav Špála is a towering figure in Czech modern art whose legacy has seen fluctuating fortunes of rejection and uncritical acclaim from Czech society. Despite this, Špála remains one of the most sought-after artists in the country. His paintings are familiar to many, having adorned classrooms, offices, and living rooms throughout the years. He was among the first to be honoured with the title of National Artist, receiving this prestigious award in 1946.
