Popova was born in Ivanovskoe, near Moscow, into the affluent family of Sergei Maximovich Popov and Lyubov Vasilievna Zubova. Sergei, a highly successful textile merchant, was also a fervent patron of the arts. Lyubov hailed from a cultured background. Lyubov Sergeyevna had three siblings: her elder brother Sergei, her younger brother Pavel, and her sister Olga. Pavel pursued a career in philosophy and became the custodian of his sister's artistic heritage.
