He was the fifth of six children in a family of small-scale farmers and linen weavers. He recognised his artistic talent early on and was apprenticed to a painter and glazier in Bielefeld. After completing the Journeyman examination as a painter in 1907, he enrolled in the newly established arts and crafts school. In 1909, during a visit to the Folkwang Museum in Essen, he encountered the latest trends in French painting, which significantly influenced his work. His earliest known professional pieces were created the following year.
