A lifelong resident of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Demuth lived with his mother in a house that is now the Demuth Museum, dedicated to his artistic legacy. He completed his early education at Franklin & Marshall Academy before pursuing further studies at Drexel University and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. During his time at PAFA, Demuth not only exhibited his work at the Academy but also formed a lasting friendship with poet William Carlos Williams, whom he met at his boarding house. This friendship endured throughout their lives.
